Dear people of the United States of America:
If you want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and use it as an excuse to party, that's fine, but please at least know what the hell
you are “celebrating”.
First of all, you must
know what it is NOT:
Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexico’s Independence Day, that IS actually a big day, and it’s celebrated on September 16th.
Cinco de Mayo is NOT celebrated in Mexico except for the state of Puebla.
It is NOT even a national holiday in which by law you get a free day. People in Mexico actually go to work on Cinco de Mayo, just like any other day.
It is NOT Day of Mexican Pride in Mexico. It does, however, celebrate Mexican heritage in the United States, which baffles people in Mexico.
It is NOT a date where you can find sombreros and ”fiesta” garlands and all that stuff you can find in Party City, Target or Walmart. They simply do not exist in Mexico, because absolutely no one throws “Cinco de Mayo Fiesta” parties. (Fiesta means party by the way so a Fiesta theme party makes no sense.)

Now let’s move on to
the facts.
Cinco de Mayo means nothing more than “May 5th”
and it’s the date when The Battle of Puebla took place. In case you didn’t know
(I’m guessing not), Mexico was twice invaded by the French.
The first French intervention was
from 1838 to 1839. The second time the French tried to take over this country is
when the Battle of Puebla happened. A significantly outnumbered Mexican army somehow
managed to defeat the great French army in the city of Puebla (south of
Mexico) on May 5th, 1862. But not even this is a reason to celebrate, as the Mexicans only won
the battle but eventually lost the war and the second French intervention in
Mexico lasted until 1867, with Maximilian of Habsburg as emperor.
(Yeah, from the same Habsburg that ruled the Holy Roman Empire for centuries. Maximilian was Franz Ferdinand's uncle, remember him? The guy whose assassination triggered WWI?) Anyway...
Eventually, the French troops withdrew
from Mexico as social agitation and instability never ceased. Also because
Maximilian turned out to be more liberal than the conservative French thought. Maximilian
was captured and executed in Queretaro on June 19th,1867.
So when you think you are celebrating Mexican Independence or
Mexican Pride or whatever, you are actually celebrating that the Mexicans won a
battle to a foreign army for the first and last time, which eventually meant
nothing because they lost the war anyway and the French took over.
So, celebrate and have fun. But please be respectful for our culture, traditions, and history. It’s offensive that you dress up in a sombrero and a moustache, with piñatas hanging everywhere and think that’s soooo “Mexican”.
Sincerely yours,
A Mexican.
