Dear people of the United States of America: If you want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and use it as an excuse to party, that's fine, but please at least know what the hell you are “celebrating”. First of all, you must know what it is NOT: Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexico’s Independence Day, that IS actually a big day, and it’s celebrated on September 16 th . Cinco de Mayo is NOT celebrated in Mexico except for the state of Puebla. It is NOT even a national holiday in which by law you get a free day. People in Mexico actually go to work on Cinco de Mayo, just like any other day. It is NOT Day of Mexican Pride in Mexico. It does, however, celebrate Mexican heritage in the United States, which baffles people in Mexico. It is NOT a date where you can find sombreros and ”fiesta” garlands and all that stuff you can find in Party City, Target or Walmart.
